Bases

With the withdrawl of the Hunter in 1994 the Swiss Air Force reduced the number of its active and reserve airfields. As of today, the Swiss Air Force only has 8 active bases:

Alpnach

Duebendorf

Emmen

Locarno

Lodrino

Meiringen

Payerne

Sion

Airfields closed with the withdrawl of the Hunter and since are:

Buochs Interlaken Mollis Raron
Samedan St. Stephan Turtmann Ulrichen

Further airbases being closed before included the ones at Ambri, Frutigen, Kaegiswil, Muenster, Reichenbach, Saanen and Zweisimmen. The highest number of airbases / airfield of the Swiss Air Force was 75.

These closures also affected some of the ranges (such as the Alpnachersee-Range). Today, there are three major ranges still active – with Dammastock only being used for air-to-air gunnery during the wintertime:

Forel

Ebenfluh (Axalp)

Dammastock
