Active Bases

1 January 2009

With the withdrawl of the Hunter in 1994 the Swiss Air Force reduced the number of its active and reserve airfields and this trend has continued into the 21st century with the introduction of the Armee XXI defence reforms.

Another round of airbase re-alignments was announced on 6 December 2004 which will see further closures over the next decade.

Photography around bases

With the change of law in 1991, Switzerland became very liberal towards photography of military aircraft. Most bases do have official viewing area. But sometimes these area do not satisfy the needs of the photographers.

If you park away from the official viewing area, on occasion you may be asked by security to return to the designated park. Irresponsible behaviour, such as thoughtless parking or walking on private land, is NOT TOLERATED by the local Police or farmers and being asked to move is usually the result of such action.
