The evaluation for a new fighter aircraft in order to replace the Vampire and the Venom in 1957 lead to the procurement of a total of 152 Hawker Hunter F.58/A and 8 Hawker Hunter T.68. The first thirteen aircraft were produced for the RAF, but re-routed to Switzerland . J-4014 to J-4100 were then delivered straight from the production line. The second and third series were second-hand aircraft purchased in 1971 and 1974 resp. These aircraft were completely overhauled in Switzerland.
With the downsizing of the Swiss Air Force in the early nineties, the surviving Hunter were slowly withdrawn from use. Many of them can still be found flying around as warbirds or sitting in museums.
